The Why is an emotional short film that delves into the journey of Daniel, a young man grappling with guilt and addiction. The story navigates between present-day therapy sessions and poignant flashbacks, gradually unraveling the events that led Daniel to his current state. As he confronts his past mistakes and battles with inner turmoil, Daniel finds himself in a rehab facility, where he forms a complex bond with his therapist, Theresa. Through their interactions, the film explores themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of human connection. The Why offers a heartfelt exploration of addiction and recovery, shedding light on the challenges individuals face while on the path to healing, redemption, and self-forgiveness.

Growing up in an abusive and addictive environment, I always questioned why people would turn to drugs and alcohol when they know the consequences? Why do we choose destructive paths, even when we know better?

In 2021, I found myself facing those very questions as my own life unraveled. I had struggled for years with personal loss and family issues, but in April of that year, everything changed. I received the devastating news that my close friend had died from an overdose, just days after we had last hung out. The guilt and grief were overwhelming. I felt like I had been part of the very behavior that led to his death.

The Why stems from my experience and my friend’s story. Writing and directing this film was my way of processing the pain and guilt of that year, and it became my therapy. My hope is that sharing this story will not only resonate with those who understand these challenges but also offer a glimmer of hope for recovery and redemption. My greatest wish is that this film helps viewers, in some way, find answers to their own 'why,' just as it did for me.
